Last Post!
Hey People! This will be the very last post...
Therefore, I would like to blog alittle on the experiences that I've gained through this subject.

From the use of the internet to the understanding of related topics on drug abuse, I've really learnt quite alot from UIR.

I realized that I can actually find a more detailed or specific information for my research topic. By browsing through other web pages, commenting on their layout, design, accessibilty and lots more, actually helps me to brush up my design skills if I were to be WebPage Designer in future.

UIR has been interesting and the workload was manageable, thus making it enjoyable!
That's all I have for you guys...
Bye!

E learning - Wiki!

This week's e-learning!
No school for me on Friday (:

As I mentioned, it was e-learning, so we're tasked to update our wiki.
I just posted an entry there awhile ago.
It was done based on a resource that i've gathered last practical.

I've caught a big one this time! The website's really good.
It provided me with lots of useful and valuable information.
It covers the following topics:

What is drug abuse?
Statistics on teenage drug use.
Dangerous effects of drug use in teens.
What type of drug abuse are teenagers associated with?
Symptoms and warnings signs of drug abuse.
What are the causes and risk factors of teen drug use?

Basically, it covers all that I'm researching for, or i should say, it covers MORE THAN what I'm researching for.

Grace updated on her topic as well, "impact of blogging business".
Wiki not only allows me to post, but also, edit on other posts that were contributed by someone else!
In this way, we're able to learn more about other topics that are being tasked to our fellow subject mates.

Thats' all for e-learning.

Last week's lab session.

We had our e-learning quiz and had a score of 14 upon 20.
Not too good, not to bad...

Miss Faridah introduced a website to us, http://www.talkingcock.com/
We played the Pac' Mat.

It's like a pac man game where:

Pac Man = Mas Selamat
Monsters = Policemen

I did'nt know how to end the game because I cleared everything but they doesn't allow me to continue to the next round.
So... I purposely banged into one of the policemen.

The purpose of this website is to potray the typical Singaporeans' way of lifestyle such as our languages used, "Singaporean News" , the mentality that we have and lots more.

Miss Faridah splited us into two groups.
I fell under the 'Singaporean Group" whereas the other group represented "Foreigners working in Singapore".

We were supposed to write down how we would react a website like this.
I, as a Singaporean, would think that this website is beneficial to us as it brings humour, games and lots of news-related stuff. (Regarding Singapore only)

From here, I can also get updated with news which I've overlooked from other medias.
Therefore, I think that this website is sustainable as Singaporeans like me would definitely check them out during our free time.

Stay tune for my last post okay! (:

Dream Holiday - Switzerland!

I've always wanted to visit Australia, Hokkaido and Switzerland.
But i'll rank Switzerland as my "most-desired-first-dream-holiday-visit"!

My aunt, Cindy, recommended me Swtizerland when she came back from there.
She tagged Switzerland, "a-must-go-country".

I'm going to quote what she says, "The farm stay was enjoyable, people over there were polite and they received us with a very wamrth welcome.. We stayed over at their place and there were so many animals.. sheeps, cows, dogs, cats, horses, pigs, chickens and goats!
They also allowed us to milk the cows and goats!

The sceneries there were fabulous! Land covered with pure white snow..
With snowmans, snowballs and snow fights! And along our way, there were people offering chocolates! They(Staff promoting chocolates) would stand right in the middle of the snow paths and ask if you would like to have some milk or dark chocolates.
When the weather is cold, chocolates would be good!
It keeps you warm and it does inject you with happy hormones."

So... This is why Swtizerland left me a good impression.
I would like to experience what she went through. I'll always imagine myself walking under the snowy weather and having milk chocolate melting in my mouth.
I think I would bring some chocolates along with me, in case nobody is there to offer me. (HAHA)

I used google to search for a Switzerland related website.
And this the web site that I have found.
http://www.theswissholidays.ch/

And one of the criteria that i particularly liked about this website is it's PURPOSE.
It aims to attract tourist(audience) by posting lots of pretty pictures such as the sceneries, accomodations and it covers almost everything that a tourist would want to search for.
There are packages such as honey moon packages, family packages, active and wellness packages, special packages etc..

It also provides infomation about Switzerland information such as...
Tourist Place, Public Holidays/Top Events, Swiss City Information, Shopping and Restaurant, Travel Tips and Travel Formalities

Other Information:
General Information
Geographic Information
Customs Entry Regulations

Let me show you a few more pictures of Switzerland!

That's about it for my dream holiday!

We had to work on our UIR Practical 6 on tuesday after Ms. Faridah gave us a feedback session on our blogs.
Actually, this practical is more of a continuation from practical 4 and 5.

I've to choose one resource that I found last practical
http://www.medicinenet.com/teen_drug_abuse/page2.htm

For Part A of the practical,

I evaluated on the PRESENTATATION AND ARRANGEMENT of the Web Site.
On the whole, the page looks messy for it's layout but I must say, it is organized for it's content.
Headers were clear.
Just that, that were too many links everywhere and the web site has no graphics, moving images and it is lack of images, thus making the entire page too wordy.

As shown in the pic, advertisements were irrelevant. The topic's about drug abuse but a cholesterol related advertisement was displayed.
However the content were relevant and information such as the satistics were provided and I found it very useful.

Although the colours and the background of the page looks simple, but the text were easy to be read.
The page has tabs which allows easy naviagation.
Tabs such as Home, News&Views, Diseases and Conditions etc.

As for Part B,
Bascially, we have evaluate a certain website (teen's drug abuse) according to the 9 Criterias.

•Purpose
•Coverage
•Authority
•Accuracy
•Currency
•Accessibility
•Presentation and Arrangement
•Usability
•Overall Quality

Opps, this post is long...
I think i shall stop here!

Cheerios! (:

Search Facilities!

Weather's been really humid lately, be sure to hydrate yourselves!

Oh yes, during our UIR lab lesson on Friday, we were suppose to finish our practical 4 and 5.
Basically, that practical's about the different internet search facilities available and I'm suppose to evaluate how effective they were.

I learnt that in the search field, we can actually use keyword variations.
For example, the word "impact" can be replaced with words such as "effect", "cause", consequences".

Another example would be, replacing the word "youth" with "teens", "teenagers" or "adolescent".

And also, in the search field, we can broaden or limit the search results by using operators such "AND" or "OR".

I spent the 2nd hour of the lesson choosing three search facilites as well as evaluating them.

Search Engine - Google

Meta Search Engine - Clusty

(Although Ms Faridah chose Metacrawler to be her meta search engine, I would like to try Clusty out)

Subject Directory - Yahoo Directory

My Evaluation...

Strengths

Google gave me the most relevant results compared to the Clusty and Yahoo Directory.

As for organization wise, I would prefer Clusty as it allows results to be categorized into clusters, therefore, being more organized.

Weakness

Although Yahoo directory provides related directory categories at the top left hand corner of the page, it doesn’t show related results.

For example, I entered a search phrase such as “Drug abuse and youth”, it only shows me results on “drugs abuse”, there is hardly any result that shows both “drug abuse” and “youth” together.

Conclusion

So on the whole, I prefer Google to the other two search facilities!
Maybe I'm biased towards Google because I have been using Google for years to search for anything under the sun.
But seriously, Googles is simple, organized and it gives me fantastic results, so I won't hesitate to choose it as my favourite!

Hey, I would like to share a few toddler pictures of me with you... yes you!

It's a saturday today and I've just submitted my IP application, wish me luck!
Enjoy your weekends!

Ipod Touch.
So here I am with $500 to spend!
(if only it's true)

Apple 8GB ipod touch
Price : $498.00
Spotted this at
http://store.apple.com/sg

Reasons why I chose this would be:
-Love its sleek design.
-Has many other functions besides the storing of music and videos.
- I simply love music and watching dramas.
(I would choose music over games or anything else)

I've been wanting an ipod touch to store all my music, pictures, movies, videos and tv shows so I can play them whenever and wherever I want. It is also able to find wireless networks and connects me to the Internet.

Anyway, my birthday's on June 25th, it's just a month away!
A real $500 shopping spree voucher would be good (:

My learnings.

Hello! Here I am to blog again.
Didnt attend UIR today because it was e-learning.
So basically, we're suppose to answer two questions.

1)How internet helps to enrich my academic life
2) My take on advocacy websites.

From that exercise, I learnt that internet can be a powerful technology if it is put to good use.
For example, file sharing, electronic mails and online chatting.
It serves as a communication tool for students like you and I, or even, working adults!

One of the internet resource that is commonly used would be the Windows live messenger.

I've also learnt from Jackie that advocacy websites can be used to help the weaker ones to voice out what they truly think or want.
Human rights that is!

Thats about it for my e-learning today.

Oh yes, last week I did a little research on the topic that I've choosen:
the impact of drugs on youth.

I've to come up with "impact of drug on youth" related links of:

Discussion forums
Electronic journals and magazines
WWW Site.

I had difficulty finding links for those sites.
The results were more of "prevention" or "risks" of taking drugs.
It didnt really hit the point of "impact" and "youth".

This one of the links which I've found.
Or rather, this is the only link that hits the point of drug impact on youths.

http://www.ycwa.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1192154790

It tells me the how youths behave after taking drugs, their attitude towards the community, what led them to drug abuse and so on.

I just don't understand why these people have to take drugs!
It's bad for the health, so what if it makes you high at that point of time?
Having to suffer for the rest of your life is really not worthwhile.
But seriously, don't they have anything better to do? Like taking up sports, online gaming or brushing up on their studies?
I'm a youth myself, but sometimes I just don't get their way of thinking.

Anyway, during our 2nd lesson of the week, we also did something quite similar to the first.
The only difference was having us to look for PERSONAL and ORGANIZATIONAL websites.

From that practical, I learnt that Personal Website is:

PersonalMaintained by an individual
Relates to his/her personal interests
Include materials on specific subject
May be part of an organizational page

Whereas organizational website is:

Created and maintained by a particular organization
Include company and university sites, sites of professional groups, society or organizations
Contains extensive materials on the subjectInterest in facts relating to it e.g. address, phone numbers, e-mail address, etc.

And I've also identified Yahoo as the search facility that I used to obtain the results for the drug related websites.

Alright, it's 12.10am now.
Time for me to turn in! (:

Will update more on the Impact of drug abuse on youths soon!
Bye!

ME!
Hello! I'm Tilynn and this will be my first post. Just changed the blog skin awhile ago.
Haven't been using blogger for quite a long time. I've been blogging on livejournal instead.

Here's the address.
http://tilynnhigh.livejournal.com/

I'm supposed to type this in proper english and here's more about me.

I am 19 this year and currently enrolled in the course, Information Technology.
I've been enjoying my life in TP except for the fact that I've to do deal with several projects.
I've got a sister, her name's Kelicia. Not sure if I am allowed to type "haha" here. Oh well..
and my mum's a housewife and she can really draw!

see what I mean?

C135B, my class for Year 1.
the best classmates i could ever have.

More about me.

Primary school - Our lady of the nativity.
Secondary School - St Joseph Convent
Been taking up Netball as my CCA since Primary 4.

But not anymore, for now.
My hobbies are netball, bowling, running and you can date me for mahjong!

I'm more of a sport person but I've been a bum lately.
Feeling kind of sick now due to the ever changing weather.
"ARGHHHH." whoever's sick like me, get well soon and drink plenty of H2O!

There are also two websites which i frequent:
http://www.facebook.com/
http://www.wikipedia.com/

FACEBOOK.

it's somewhat like friendster which allows users like you and I to get updates on your friends.
I can also add different kinds of applications such as "growing gifts" and "photo albums".
"Growing gifts" is a virtual way of gift sending which will only grow after 3 days upon receiving.

As for "photo albums", I can upload tonnes of pictures into facebook's database, so my friends can view it whenever they want.
Basically, facebook is a social networking website that allows users to join networks, such as a school, place of employment, or geographic region, to connect and interact with other people.

WIKIPEDIA

It acts like an free online encyclopedia where an overview of a wide range of topics can be found.
It is also available in different languages such as French, Japanese, Italian etc.
I often used it for:
Project Work
Overall Description of TV dramas. (eg. heroes)

Or rather, I'll hop by this website when I'm curious to know more about a certain object/person/term.

UIR

PS: I've been tagged with a UIR assignment, impact of drug abuse on youths.
so stay tune for more of my drug-related posts even if you're not interested in them ok?
i promise to blog more about myself (:

Blogging about who I am and what I've learnt is definitely my kind of thing!
Therefore, UIR's been a relaxing and interesting subject for me, love it!
